Unbeknownst to Paul Fromm, Ralph Shapey organized a surprise concert in honor of the patron’s 75th birthday in 1982, and requested testimonials from all of the composers who had been previously commissioned by the Fromm Foundation. More than forty (including Mario Davidovsky, Barbara Kolb, Alberto Ginastera, Milton Babbitt, and George Crumb) responded with outpourings of affection and gratitude, with anecdotes about the effect Fromm had on their lives, and with insights into Fromm’s personal character. These testimonials were included in the concert program.
