Current Fromm Commission Application

The 2024 Fromm Commission Application is now open and can be accessed here.  The deadline for submission is June 10, 2024 and results will be announced in December 2024.

Fromm Foundation Commission Overview

Each year, the Fromm Music Foundation accepts applications for commissions of new music, and awards commissions to fourteen American composers. The Fromm Music Foundation commissions represent one of the ways that the Foundation strives to support the creation of new musical works and bring contemporary concert music closer to the public. The Fromm commission is available for all types of compositions regardless of idiom, instrumentation, style, or the use of technology. Submissions in jazz, hybrid, electronic, or other idioms are welcome.

Amount of Commission: $12,000

Awardees will receive an advance payment of $6,000 at commissioning, and completed scores are requested within three years of the award date. An additional performance stipend of $1500-4000 is available to the ensembles premiering these works.

Procedural Guidelines Overview

To be eligible, a composer must be a legal permanent resident of the United States at the time of the application. For these purposes, "residents" shall be deemed to include U.S. Citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) who have been lawfully admitted to, and reside in, the United States and can ensure they are legally able to be paid for services by Harvard University. Individuals with temporary or student visas are not eligible to apply.

Please note: if you previously received a Fromm Commission, there is a fifteen-year waiting period (from the time it was awarded) before you can apply again. The commission is to create a new work and cannot be applied to projects that have been awarded other commissions or previously composed.

The Fromm Music Foundation does not accept joint commissions or applications for composers from organizations. Individual composers must apply directly.
