Index cards were used by the administrative staff of the Fromm Foundation to tabulate the survey responses, with a card for each composer to receive at least one “vote.” The card for then-celebrity conductor Leonard Bernstein indicates only two of his works received more than one vote, unsurprising given their uneasy relationship with prevailing aesthetic currents, but remarkable in terms of his posthumous prestige.
