Susie Ibarra

Susie Ibarra is a Filipinx composer, percussionist, and sound artist.  

Many of her work focuses in conservation: with Indigenous and traditional music cultures including North and South Philippine islands; her sound research advocates for the stewardship of glaciers and freshwaters; and she collaborates with Joudour Sahara in Morocco on initiatives in sustainable music and support for women and girls. 

She is a Foundation For Contemporary Arts Music/ Sound Artist (2022), National Geographic Explorers Storyteller (2020); USAArtists Music Fellow (2019); Asian Cultural Council Fellow (2018); TEDSenior Fellow (2014).   

Susie Ibarra is a Yamaha, Vic Firth, Zildjian Drum Artist. 

Several of her compositions include: 

Talking Gong ( New Focus Recordings 2021), trio features artists Claire Chase ( bass, alto , flute and piccolo) and Alex Peh ( piano), a SUNY New Paltz commission as Davenport Composer in Residence 2018. The album is inspired by Maguindanaon kulintang and birdsongs. 

Water Rhythms: Listening to Climate Change is a collaboration with glaciologist Dr. Michele Koppes.  Ibarra composes from their recordings of global watersheds, including Greenland ice sheet and Indian Himalayas. Exhibitions include TEDCountdown, Edinburgh(2021); ARKO Art Center, Seoul(2021); multi spatial installation,Fridman Gallery NY (2021) and SF Exploratorium (2022). 

Fragility Etudes, a commission for Asia Society Triennial 2021 premiered at MASSMoCA 2021.  Ibarra explores with ensemble performance and conducting, polyrhythms and interconnectedness in the glass equation of fragility. This work was filmed by multimedia artist Yuka C. Honda 

As a producer, Ibarra collaborates with Splice to create sound packs of environmental sounds, traditional music, and her own percussion language. Sounds of the Drâa Valley (Splice 2022) is six traditional ensembles from South Sahara Morocco (2022).  

With composer and bassist Richard Reed Parry she released compositions in an album and soundpack focused on breath cycles and heart beats, Heart and Breath: Rhythm and Tone Fields (OFFAIR 2022).
